Walter “Walt” Reuben Spike, age 91 of Buffalo passed away peacefully at Cottagewood Assisted Living on March 18, 2016. He was born in Chatham Township, Wright County, MN on November 20, 1924 the son of Reuben and Hattie Nieskens Spike. Walter Spike and Kathryn Sturges Little were joined in holy marriage August 27, 1948 at the Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Buffalo. God blessed their marriage with three children. He was a lifelong, faithful member of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church. Walt worked for Superior Separator in Hopkins as a purchaser. Then Walt and Kathryn opened Spikes Meat Locker in 1957 and built the Buffalo House Restaurant in 1964. Walt and Kathryn purchased a farm in 1973 and started milking cows and farming with their son Kurt who still runs the farm.
Walt had many 50+ year commitments including Eastern Star and The Masonic Lodge where he held many offices including Worthy Patron and was the recipient of the Hiram Award. 55 years with the Buffalo Rodeo and Past President of the MN Meat Processor Association. In his spare time he became a pilot and owned his own plane and belonged to the Buffalo Flying Club. As his sons got old enough he started a Weblow Scout Troop and later became a Boy Scout Leader. He was also active in Farm Bureau, Food for Life, Buffalo Food Shelf, The Buffalo Gun Club, Buffalo Car Club and Wright County Shrine Club. Survived by wife: Kathryn of Buffalo; children: Kevin Spike and Kurt (Judy) Spike all of Buffalo and Karla (Randal) Blade of Mooresville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; sister in law: Laura Spike; other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, a sister Elaine Wannebo, brothers Delton “Bill”, Roy, Harold, Vernon and Morris Spike.
Funeral services for Walter Spike will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at The Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Buffalo.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd from 9:00 A.M. until time of services at the church.
Casket Bearers will be Kristopher Spike, Jonathan Spike, Jeremy Spike, Dave Spike, Scott Little and Ray Little Jr.
We truly enjoyed serving on the MAMP board with Walt and having him and Kathryn as friends.
So sorry to hear. Walt was a great man and we will remember him and miss him. Our Sympathy is with all of you. Wish we could be with you but we are down with the bug going around. Our prayers are with you.
