Verna Mae Burling, age 93 of Champlin, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at St. Therese of New Hope. She was born July 22, 1923 in St. Lawrence Township, Jordan, MN, the daughter of Emil Clarence “E.C.” and Lulia Rowena (Chard) Burling.

Verna was baptized on October 14, 1923 at Presbyterian Church in Belle Plaine, MN.
She was a 1941 graduate of Jordan High School.
After high school, Verna attended Mankato Business College. She began her career with Northwestern State Bank in Jordan, MN for four and a half years, and then transferred to Northwestern Bank in Slayton, MN, and then Northwestern National Bank in Hopkins, MN. Later, Verna moved to Minneapolis and worked for Cargill, Inc. Her next employment was with the Veterans Administration, then Midland Co-Op, and in 1954 Verna was employed with William L. Baxter Advertising Inc. retiring in 1992.

In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and golfing. One of Verna’s proudest accomplishments was learning to drive, passing her driver’s test in July of 1964; although she was still proficient with the Metro Transit System and the Minneapolis skyways.

She was a member of Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN; ordained as a Deacon on June 16, 1966 and as a Ruling Elder on April 24, 1966. She was a current member of Hope Presbyterian Church of Richfield, MN.

Preceded in death by her father: E.C. Burling; mother: Lulia (Chard) Burling; infant brother: Barkley; brothers: Roger and Ralph; and sister: Helen.

Survived by nephews: Bob (Yvonne) Burling and Tom (Peggy) Burling; niece: Jane (Mark) Paurus; great and great-great nieces and nephews; and other relatives and classmates.

Funeral services for Verna Burling will be held Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo. Pastor Dean Brown will officiate. Interment at Spirit Hill Cemetery in Jordan, MN.

Casket bearers are Bob Burling, Tom Burling, Jane Paurus, Adam Burling, Haley Burling, Addison Burling, Anthony Haik, Laurie Page, Lisa Haberer, Amanda Haik, Drew Burling, Michael Haberer, Emma Haberer, Timothy Haberer, Abigail Haberer and Lily Haberer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

    It makes my heart smile to think of the beautiful family reunion happening, just in time to celebrate Christmas in the presence of the King (referring to Jesus, not Elvis). 🙂

    May you rest in peace. We will remember the times spent together and I will forever remember going to the basement of the Edina house to pick a prize! Many childhood treasures were found there!!! Thank you for the smiles. Adam, Jodi, Drew and AJ

    What a neat picture of Verna. The “kids” are right. She always did make one smile. Didn’t realize she had so many jobs. She only talked of the Baxter one. Wish I could be with you to celebrate the life of one special lady. Sending hugs to all.
