Visitation Information

Sylvia Paula Holland, age 92, of Buffalo, MN, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Lake Ridge Care Center in Buffalo.

Sylvia was born September 9, 1917, on the family farm in Chatham Township, Wright County, near Buffalo, to Henry and Hulda (Sieg) Nieskens. She was baptized October 7, 1917, and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo on December 8, 1939.

Sylvia was united in marriage to Ervin Joseph Holland on October 22, 1938, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo and to this union three sons and two daughters were born; Bradley, Robert, Daniel, Janet and Bernice. The family farmed in Maple Lake Township. In 1974 Sylvia moved into Buffalo.

Sylvia was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. She enjoyed baking, embroidery, canning and gardening. She also enjoyed bible reading. Sylvia will always be remembered for her sense of humor, that special twinkle in her eyes and for her hats. All who knew her will remember her as a very caring and giving person.

Sylvia is survived by her three sons and two daughters with their spouses: Bradley (Rita) Holland of Buffalo, Robert (Sue) Holland of Litchfield, MN, Daniel (Kim) Holland of Buffalo, Janet (Larry) Bengtson of Buffalo, and Bernice (Tom) Parquette of Branson, MO; twelve grandchildren: Theresa (Bill) Henson, Julie Bengtson, Steven Bengtson, Kate Holland, Vicki Holland, Will Holland, Anna Holland, Shannon Matlock, Rob (Samantha) Spangler, Lacey(Corey) Walker, Brandon (Jennifer) Holland, and Dan Holland; seven great grandchildren, Ben Henson, Matthew Henson, Peter Loiacono , Camdyn Spangler, Reagyn Spangler, Landon Holland and Danica Walker. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Ruby Nieskens and Evelyn Holland.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Hulda Nieskens, stepmother: Eva Nieskens, husband Ervin Holland in October of 1962, sister Leila and her husband Ed Osbourne , brother Gordon Nieskens, sister and brother-in-law Helen (Holland) and Reuben Stoppelman, and brother-in-law Howard Holland.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 4, 2010, at noon at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo, MN with the Rev. James Disney as officiant. Sandy Baert will play the organ with the congregation singing “I Know that My Redeemer Lives,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “Amazing Grace.” Special music will be provided by the family which includes “In the Garden” and “We Will Not Pass This Way Again.”
Visitation will be held two hours prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Buffalo, MN.

Casket bearers and honorary casket bearers will be her grandchildren and one great grandchild.

    I kept meaning to come back for a visit, but kept putting it off. I will always remember her stories, her hats, her cute accent, and her warm hands. I wish I had said goodbye. Love you, Aunt Sylvia. Say hello to Grandpa for me.
