Sheldon E. Fertig, Sr., age 81, of Buffalo, MN, passed away on Wednesday June 30th, 2010, at
Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, MN, with his family at his side.

Sheldon was born on December 7th, 1928, the son of Ellis and Florence (Widerstrand)Fertig in Grandforks, ND.

Sheldon grew up in Lake Bronson, MN, and graduated high school there.

He then attended college at Bemidji (MN) State, and played hockey for 3 years as their center.

He then served in the Army during the Korean War from 1951 through 1953, earning the rank of Sergeant.

Upon his return, he went to St. Cloud (MN) State to finish his education; he also played hockey there for the Huskies.

He was united in marriage to Donna Mae Holmgren on March 7th, 1959.

They moved to Buffalo in 1959 to start their family. Sheldon began his teaching career at Buffalo High School, teaching for a total of 28
years, retiring in 1987. Sheldon ran a small engine repair shop for 46 years with his son Clair, which was later run by his son Sheldon, Jr.

Sheldon is survived by his loving family: son, Clair Fertig of Buffalo, daughters, Michele (Daryl) Cardinal of Monticello, MN, and Jonay (Kevin) Krone of Monticello, daughter-in-law Sharon Fertig of Buffalo, grandchildren: Sheldon, Mandy, Shane (Kristina), Devin, Ashley, Jacob, Jeremy and Cammey, great-grandchildren: Genevieve, Leila, Ryan and Madison, siblings: ElRay (VerDell) Fertig of Anoka, MN, Audrey (Tony) Roettger of Champlin, MN, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by: wife Donna Mae Fertig, son Sheldon Fertig Jr., parents Ellis and Florence Fertig.

Memorial Funeral Service held Friday July 9th, 2010, at Zion Lutheran Church – Buffalo at 4 P.M.
Visitation begins at 2 P.M. at the Church. Fellowship is to follow the service.

    Mr. Fertig’s family: I am very sorry to hear of your loss. You know your dad was a good man. I talked with him many times at school and went to open periods in his room in High School.

    We were so sorry to hear of Sheldon’s passing. Sheldon was a favorite patient of ours and will be missed. He was blessed to have such a wonderful family to look after him and one that loved him so much. May you find comfort in the many happy memories you have of him. Hang in there.

    My twin brother called me from MN to tell me about Sheldon passing away. As a classmate of Sheldon in Lake Bronson I always remember him as a very fine individual. My condolences to the family.

    Sorry for your loss. He was a great teacher, I had him my senior year. I was failing the class, along with my friends, and we sent him ballons and flowers on the last day. I passed the class, not sure if that helped or not. He did great with some of us girls that would get kind of off track during class. Never really seemed to get mad. It was nice a couple of years later to find out he was Michele’s dad and to see him off and on throughout the years. He will be greatly missed by the family and everybody else he encountered through his life.
