Russell William Nelson was born on the family farm on June 1, 1915 in Silver Creek Township, rural Monticello, Minnesota. He died on February 3, 2014 at the age of 98 years. He attended Larson Country School #8 and graduated from Monticello High School in 1933 and from The School of Agriculture, University of Minnesota, St. Paul in 1935. On April 17, 1943 he married Mildred Magnuson of Hasty, Minnesota.
He lived on the family farm until age 95 when he moved to the Monticello Care Center. He had been very active in the agricultural community having served on numerous boards including the Monticello Co-op Creamery Board and The American Dairy Association for over 20 years as Regional and State Director. He served Silver Creek Township for 35 continuous years as a supervisor and as a Planning and Zoning Committee member. In 2004, he was named one of Wright County’s Outstanding Senior Citizens. In 2012 his farm received Century Farm recognition. He was active at Trinity Lutheran serving as an usher, council member, call committee member and on the parsonage and church building committees.
Russell was preceded in death by his wife Mildred, his parents: Alfred & Martha, sister Lorraine, and brother Kenneth.
Russell is survived by three children: Gary Nelson of Monticello, Janet (George) Dahlman of Coon Rapids, Ronald (Mary Jo) Nelson of Elk River. Eight grandchildren: Amy Nelson, Tanya (Jason Horst) Nelson, Ryan (Sara) Nelson, Bruce (Tricia) Dahlman, Brad (Katie) Dahlman, Joshua Nelson, Richard (Kelly) Nelson, Kenny Nelson. Ten great-grandchildren: Braydon, Ada, Ethan, Luke, Jordan, Zachary, Parker, Paige, Christian, Caleb.
Services were held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Monticello. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Monticello.

Amy Nelson, Tanya Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Bruce Dahlman, Brad Dahlman,Joshua Nelson, Richard Nelson and Kenny Nelson.
