Roland ‘Babe’ Montague Helgeson died on October 15, 2015 at the St. Cloud VA surrounded by family.

Babe was born on January 13, 1926 in Fair Haven Township to Henry and Helena (Ziegenbein) Helgeson. He was the 13th of 14 children.

He graduated from Kimball High School and worked for a short time on the family farm.

Babe enlisted in the United States Army on March 1, 1945 and was honorably discharged on December 3, 1946. He served in the Philippines during WWII. Upon returning to the States he served as a Corporal in the Military Police. Babe received the Asian Pacific Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the WWII Victory Medal, the 0 Loss of Days “Ruptured Duck” Lapel Button and an M1 Expert Rifle rating.
After leaving the service, Babe worked in Washington State for a company that built logging roads for timber cutting and hauling.

In July 1949, Babe went to work for Barbarossa and Sons and in his 1948 Pontiac he headed out to Maddock, ND where he worked digging holes for waterlines to houses. Babe retired from Barbarossa after 42 years.

Babe married Mary Ann Schwartz on May 27, 1952 in Pearl Lake, MN. To this union four children were born: Rolland, Robert, Scott and Darlene. In the fall of 1964, Babe moved his family to St. Michael, MN.

Babe was a member of the St. Michael Catholic Church, the St. Michael American Legion, the VFW and the Knights of Columbus.

Babe enjoyed hunting, fishing and picking hazelnuts, but mostly loved his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During the holidays, he would make up his own games for them to play and win prizes. Babe made sure he didn’t leave anyone out.

Babe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ann and his children Rolland (Carol) of Buffalo, Robert (Dolores) of St. Michael, and Scott of Mahtomedi; Jeanne (Kampa) Helgeson of Rosemount; sister Eunice Schempf of Elk River; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren: Melissa (Matt) Spilman; Brady (Joelle) and Cody Helgeson; Brandon Helgeson; Stacey (Brian), McKenna and Wyatt Moehrle; Nate (Jenna) and Natalie Helgeson; Nicole (Brian), Payton and Grace Kittock; Grant Helgeson; Ben (Angela), Jack and Luke Helgeson; Gabe (Jaime), Makenzie, Madilynn and Camden Helgeson; Emily Helgeson; Amanda (Shawn) Bielke; many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and cousins; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Darlene, great-grandson Andrew Robert Kittock, twelve brothers and sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial for Roland “Babe” Helgeson will be held on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Michael Catholic Church.

Interment at St. Michael Cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 4-7 PM at The Peterson Chapel, St. Michael/Albertville Funeral Home. A Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 PM. Further visitation will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Michael Catholic Church.

Honorary Urn Bearers are Brady and Brandon Helgeson, Nathaniel and Grant Helgeson, Benjamin and Gabriel Helgeson.
