Richard “Dick” Mattson

May 21, 1931-December 10, 2023

Dick passed away peacefully at Parkview Care Center in his sleep December 10, 2023.

He was born to Clinton & Alice Mattson of Waverly, Minnesota and baptized at Marysville Swedesburg Lutheran Church.

Dick grew up on the family farm.

Dick met his wife Renee at a dance at The Waverly Village Hall and they married in 1953.   They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past June.

He loved life and worked hard, custom combining, running Mattson Bus Company and serving 20 years as a Wright County Commissioner.

Dick’s left hand pitched baseball for the Montrose town team and horseshoes when he got a chance.  But his true love was bowling.   He bowled on scratch leagues, local tournaments, Central Bowlers Alliance scratch tournaments, and all over the USA in the ABC National Bowling tournaments.   He coached youth bowling for many years.   Besides his multiple 300 games and High series awards his highest honor was being inducted into the Minnesota Bowling Hall of Fame.    He would say his highest achievement was bowling on a team with his sons and grandson.

A lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Dick served as the usher for Monday nights at Historic Marysville Church for years.    Dick and the many neighbors and families that were decendants of the founders of Marysville Church and worked to restore the church which is now used for Monday night services.   His grandsons and great grandsons were baptized in Marysville and his granddaughter and nieces were married there.

Family meant the world to him and he meant the world to us!

Dick was preceded in death by his son Todd, parents Clinton and Alice Mattson and siblings Clayton Mattson and Wanda Gilmer.

He is survived by his wife: Renee; sons: Scott Mattson and Jeff (Chris) Mattson; a daughter: Lisa (Don) Mills; grandchildren: Ryan, Cole (Mark), Eric (Caitlin), Mitchell (Monica), Samantha (Jack), Brett, Nick (Maddie), Allie and Brianna and Janelle; great grandchildren: Alex, Peyton, Miles, Riley, Teagan, Ivy, Quinn, William and “baby Mills”; sibling: David Mattson; other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service for Richard “Dick” Mattson will be held on Monday, December 18th, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo.   Lunch to follow.

A visitation will be held on Monday, December 18th one hour prior to services AT THE CHURCH.

Will be thinking about the family during this time. Loved bowling with Dick and spending time at the farm with all of you.

I’m just seeing this now. I’m so sorry to of Dick’s passing. He was so helpful to me in tracing my Swedish ancestry back from my Grandma Lillian Mattson’s line in Waverly and back to Kottbo, Venjan, Sweden. We talked on the phone quite a few times, and the last time in May, when my cousin and I visited the Marysville cemetery over Memorial Day weekend. I called up Dick and he gave us a tour over the phone as we walked through the cemetery.
My sympathies to his whole family. He was a sweetheart.
