Verla Ann (Cardinal) Lyrek, age 75, of Delano, MN, passed away Monday, September 12, 2011.
She was born March 17, 1936 on the family farm in Waverly, MN, the daughter of Willmar E. and Muriel V. (Jewett) Cardinal. She attended grade school in the area and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1955. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly.

On August 31, 1957 Verla Ann Cardinal was joined in holy marriage to Duane D. Lyrek at the Church of St. Mary in Waverly. God blessed their marriage with seven children.

Verla lived on the family farm in Delano after her marriage and has remained in that area for the past 55 years. She worked for 29 years as a waitress with Perkins in Hopkins/Minnetonka, formerly Perkins Cake & Steak. She had a lifelong love of gardening, flowers, music, canning and crocheting.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Duane D. Lyrek; children: Mary Ward, Donna (Lloyd) Vogelpohl, Robert (Normita) Lyrek, Ronald (Lisa) Lyrek, Dorothy (Neil) Bonde, LeRoy Lyrek, and Ronda (Mitch) Gordon; grandchildren: Jesse, Bobby, Stephanie, James, Brian, Mellisa, Neil Jr., Nels, Nicole, Colten, Megan, Zach, Samuel, Samantha, Traci and Jamie; 8 great-grandchildren; siblings: Willis Cardinal, Delwin (Marlene) Cardinal, Mylen (Margie) Cardinal, Marlette (William) Babatz, Jr., Arlynn Cardinal, Gerlene (Tony) Klingelhoets, Orlan (Diane) Cardinal, and Dorlyn “Dewey” (Peggy) Cardinal; sister-in-law, Darleen Cardinal. Also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents; great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Campbell; brother, Garryl Cardinal killed in action in Vietnam in 1968 and sister-in-law, Jane Cardinal.

Funeral Service will be held at 11am Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Peterson Chapel, 119 Central Avenue in Buffalo.

Visitation will be held from 4-7pm Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Buffalo.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Jesse, Brian, James, Zach, Bobby and Nels. Honorary Pallbearers are all of her other grandchildren: Stephanie, Mellisa, Neil Jr., Nicole, Colten, Megan, Samuel, Samantha, Traci, and Jamie.

The Peterson Chapel of Buffalo assisted the family with arrangements.
