Mike Van De Berg, age 73 of Albertville, went home to meet our Lord on March 13, 2019.

He was born on April 30, 1945 in Sheldon, Iowa to William and Lavonne (Hubers) Van De Berg; he was the seventh child out of nine born in to the family. They resided in Sheldon, and Mike graduated from high school there with the class of 1963.

After high school, Mike worked in Minneapolis before he enlisted in the Marine Corps. During his time working in Minneapolis, he met Elizabeth “Betty” Trossen on June 21, 1965. They exchanged letters while he was on active duty, and eventually were reunited and married on October 5, 1968 at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Crystal, MN. Mike proudly served his country for four active years (two tours in Vietnam) and two reserve years, being honorably discharged from the Marines in 1971.

Mike and Betty began their married life in Philadelphia where Mike was stationed for the military. They then moved to Chicago where Mike attended the DeVry Institute where their first two children were born. They eventually settled in Albertville in 1975 where their third child was born. Mike sold Kirby’s for about 10 years and worked for the United States Postal Service for many years, retiring in 2010.

Mike was a man of faith and a devout Catholic who regularly attended Adoration. Mike loved photography, fishing, traveling to Alaska and Europe, bike riding, listening to county and gospel music, and talking politics. Mike and Betty were very involved with TEC (Together Encountering Christ) and REC (Residents Encountering Christ) ministries for over 10 years, and Mike was also a Christian Clown. He was a past Commander of the St. Michael Legion Post 567.

Above anything else, Mike’s family was his pride and joy. He adored his grandchildren, and cherished creating special memories with each of them.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, William and Lavonne; his sister, Linda Ostenforth; nephews, David Van De Berg and Billy Hayes; and brothers-in-law, Bill Hayes and Bob Schaa.

Mike is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty; children, Steve (Larae) Van De Berg, Amy (Scott) Lands, and Heidi Van De Berg; grandchildren, Isaac, Gabriel, Seth, Josiah, and Ella Van De Berg; siblings, Muriel Schaa, Roger (Jeanne) Van De Berg, Howard (Mary) Van De Berg, Geri Hayes, Doris Van De Berg, Sheila (Bill) Simenz, Tom (Marcie) Van De Berg; and many other relatives and friends.

A visitation will take place Sunday, March 17, 2019 at St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Albertville from 4:00 – 8:00 PM with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 PM.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 18, 2019 at 10:30 AM with visitation one hour prior at the church. Interment will take place on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to The Peterson Chapel of St. Michael-Albertville. Online condolences for the family may be directed to www.thepetersonchapel.com
