Bernice Martha Hancock, age 97 of Minneapolis, formerly of St. Michael, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017. She was born October 28, 1919 in Mayor Daley’s neighborhood of Chicago, the daughter of Anthony and Martha (Kunka) Barczak. Bernice spent part of her youth in Colorado Springs, CO. and Albuquerque, N.M.|
On June 1, 1942, Bernice Barczak and Robert Hancock were united in marriage in Olympia, Washington where Robert was stationed in WWII prior to being shipped out for active duty. Bernice returned to Chicago to work while Robert served until his discharge in 1945. Bernice and Robert had three children in Chicago. In 1966, The Hancocks moved from Chicago, to St. Michael, Minnesota.
Bernice worked a variety of jobs in Olympia Washington, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Rockford Minnesota where she enjoyed serving as the Rockford Middle School secretary. Her most memorable position was working at the radio station in Olympia broadcasting the “News Hour”. Bea enjoyed theater on the stage and in the audience. She was a talented story teller. Her other passions included listening to classical music and supporting local sports teams, reading, golfing at the Monticello Country Club, and bowling. She enjoyed travel throughout the United States and Europe. Bernice was a long time member of the St. Michael Women’s Auxiliary.
Bea will be remembered for her impeccable fashion sense and her ability to make anyone she met feel comfortable and loved. She appreciated the finer things in life but never shied away from hard work. We will think of her in her stiffly starched white cotton blouse with the collar turned up, pearl nail polish and impeccable entertaining skills; complete with caviar on hand for any occasion.
We will carry on with her favorite recipes: cherry tomatoes with dill sauce, roast lamb with mint jelly, her perfect gravy and Blitz Torte. We will remember her laugh during episodes of Jackie Gleason and her fascination with everything Shakespeare.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Martha Barczak; husband, Robert C. Hancock; and brothers, John and Lawrence Barczak.
She is survived by her children, Robert Hancock (Peggy), David Hancock (Nancy), Bonnie Hancock (Joe Weyandt); grandchildren, Michael, Lance (Heather), Blake (Tammera), Elliot (Allie), Robert, Christine (Mike), Lindsey (Jon), Noel; great-grandchildren, Oliver, Ava, Vincent, Clara, Lawrence, Talla; brother, Mickey Barczak; sister-in-law, Betty Barczak; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
