Matthew was born to Daniel and Meryl Barthel on September 6th, 1983. He grew up in the St. Michael area. He was home schooled through 6th grade and then attended the St. Michael-Albertville schools; he graduated in 2002. From there, Matthew attended Alexandria Technical College pursuing a career in law enforcement. He graduated from this program in 2005.

He left the Sheriff’s office in 2011 to pursue a new career as an IT specialist; he attended Anoka Technical College. In 2013, he joined the Monticello School District IT department where he was currently employed.

In August of 2007, Matt was introduced to Sara DuChene through mutual friends. They dated long distance for 3 years, while Sara was in her doctorate program, before getting married on August 28, 2010. They have been very blessed with son, Wyatt, born in November of 2012 (4 years old) and daughter, Madison, born in September of 2016 (5 months old).

Matt had a love of all things outdoors. He enjoyed feeding the birds, skiing, and nature photography. He also had a huge love of baseball, restoring classic cars, playing computer games, and spending time with friends and family. Matt was a phenomenal father and husband; his presence will be greatly missed.
