Martinus Weinans of Rogers, MN left us suddenly, but peacefully, on his 70th birthday after a beautiful celebration with his family and lots of laughs and hugs.

Martin was born in Emmen, the Netherlands during the war in 1943, began the trade of goldsmithing in 1963 and moved to the United States in 1969. He met and married Barb Sherman in 1973. He utilized his goldsmithing skills to open up Van Guilders Goldsmith in 1984 and successfully build a unique custom jewelry and retail store in Minneapolis, and later, Edina. He always had a heart, passion and a word for people, and spent the last decade as a dedicated volunteer. He sold meat raffle with the Rogers Lions, hosted many Minnesota Dutch Club (NAAM) events, and traveled to Venezuela many times through a partnership with the catholic church to teach young people the trade of jewelry making. He lived a life of travel, friends and culture, and never tired of meeting new people. When he stayed home, he cared for his small vineyard and offered guests homemade wine from berries, pears, and grapes he grew.

He is survived by his wife Barbara (Sherman) Weinans, daughters Kate Weinans, Julie (Dick) Heuvels, Lisa Beth (Reed) Braaten and Jessica Beck, grandchildren Alexander, Sophie and Sorren, siblings Hank (Els) Weinans, Annemarie (Rudolph) Dierick, and Ria (Harrie Bulter) Weinans, many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father Johannes Bernhard Weinans, mother Anna Maria Adelheid (Deiman) Weinans, and sister Annemaria Greta (Weinans) Draaisma.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Mary Queen of Peace Church 21304 Church Avenue, Rogers, MN. A luncheon will follow the service.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2013 from 5-8 PM at The Peterson Chapel, St. Michael/Albertville. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. Further visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Friday.

Honorary Pallbearers Henk Weinans, Lodewijk “Wiet” Seghers, Dennis Pearson, Phillip O’Brien, John “Jack” Hines, and Dick Heuvels.

In lieu of flowers, any contributions received by the family will be donated to the Venezuelan Mission project.

The Peterson Chapel, St. Michael/Albertville served the family.

Dear all (now sadly one less…),

I’m sad, sad to hear that Martin IS no longer… sad thinking about you and all the people he influenced with his big heart and warm thoughts… I miss him now even though I haven’t seen him for almost 20 years… he was important to me – during my stay in 90/91 and in the years following when he was often in my thoughts. I often think about the amazing Weinans and wish technology was further developed so it was possible to travel with the speed of light or even faster so that we could get together by pushing a button – especially in moments like this.

    Lots of love from me…
    Your friend Morten

I just learned today of Martins passing. I am very sorry for your loss. I will miss seeing Martin at the shop. He was a true craftsman and a very sweet, intelligent man.
He will be remembered fondly by many in the Edina community.
