Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Catholic Church, Buffalo. Visitation one hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Staples, MN.
Lorraine Marie Kurpius was born in Staples, MN on June 15, 1918 at the farm home of her parents, Steve & Clara (Knosalla) Kurpius. She began her educational journey by attending the primary grades in Staples. In 1928 her family moved to Caledonia, ND, where she was enrolled as a fourth grader & graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1936. That fall she began attending nursing school at St. Michael’s Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, but soon learned that this was not the career she wished to pursue. She then enrolled in a teacher training class in Staples for a full year of intensive studies & practice teaching. She graduated second in her class & accepted her first position in Browerville, MN for a monthly salary of $69.50 (minus $16 for her room & board). This would be the start of a 30 year teaching career.
On June 28, 1940, Lorraine married Amiel W. Randel. They moved onto the Randel farm near Beltrami, MN & began a partnership of grain farming in the Red River Valley. During those busy years of being a farm wife Lorraine continued her educational studies by attending summer school & evening courses at Moorhead State College to attain the three year teaching certificate which was offered at that time.
She taught in a combination first & second grade classroom for sixteen consecutive years in Lockhart, MN & then transferred to a first grade position in the nearby Ada School District.
The Randels retired from farming in 1966 & moved to Buffalo, MN where they enjoyed life on Lake Pulaski. During those years they joined the Airstream Travel Club & were very active touring in the continental United States, Canada & Mexico. While in Buffalo, Lorraine earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in education from St. Cloud State University. She enjoyed teaching fourth grade & continued to substitute teach after her retirement.
In 1986 the Randels moved into Buffalo & took up residence at the Tower Hills Condominiums where many lasting friendships were made. After 51 years of marriage Amiel passed away on March 20. Lorraine continued to live at Tower Hills enjoying the card games, luncheons, & camaraderie of her dear friends. Lorraine’s teaching personality was ever-present, manifesting itself in the decorated community bulletin boards for the potlucks at her apartment building, & shining through in the way she would always notice & acknowledge children.
Lorraine is survived by a special family, Jerry & Dolores Kurpius of Winter haven, FL; Lynell (Tim) Russell of St. Cloud, MN, & their sons, & families, Jesse ( Laura) Russell of Monticello, MN, Mathew (Maria) Russell of Minneapolis, MN & Justin Russell of St. Cloud, MN & Darek (Kim) Kurpius ofBuhl, MN. Other survivors include a brother, Edward (Delores) Kurpius of Crookston, MN & many nieces, nephews, great nieces & great nephews.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sisters, Mamie & Evangeline, & her brothers, Joe, Ted, & Stanley & a special nephew, Donald Kurpius.
God bless the memory of Lorraine Kurpius Randel!

    Dear family of Lorraine,
We wish to extend our sympathy for your loss. Lorraine was a special friend of my mom, who was also a Tower Hill resident, and they shared a special friendship. After my mother passed away in 2010, we continued to connect with Lorraine, as we kept my mom’s condo until recently. We gave Lorraine a pendant of my mom’s, after her death, because it had the initial L, which they both shared, and because we wanted Lorraine to have a special memory of a special friend. God’s Blessings to her family. She was a wonderful example of a fine christian woman and special person.

I just today (1-3-15) found out that Lorraine passed away in 2013. My Christmas card was returned so I looked her up on the internet and was directed to this website. I’m not sure if anyone will see this but want to extend my sympathy to all who loved her. She and Amiel were such wonderful neighbors on Lake Pulaski. They would invite us over for meals and show us slides of their travels. We moved away but visited Lorraine at her condo occasionally, especially when our daughter came home from Texas since she always enjoyed her as a young child. They even came to her graduation. I am so saddened that she is no longer with us but know she is in an even better place. She was so sweet and kind.
