Karen Marie Maeder, age 73 of St. Michael, passed away on January 30, 2023.

Karen was born the daughter of Wilhelm & Christine (Erikson) Knudson on January 11, 1950 in Grand Rapids, MN.

She was long time resident of Sauk Centre, dedicating her career to the MN Department of Corrections in Sauk Centre and later Red Wing retiring in 2005. After retirement Karen enjoyed working at Josephson’s clothing store until 2013 when she moved to St. Michael to be closer to family.

For Karen her passions were family, faith and food. She lived these three things out by volunteering at the St. Michael Senior Center and at her grandchildren’s schools. Karen was active in bible study and a great friend and support to those who needed her. She loved to cook, bake, read and be at the lake…particularly swimming & fishing. But her greatest joy was found in the time spent with her family, especially her grandkids, they were her pride and joy.

She was an amazing mix of strong, independent, stubborn, loving and kind.

Up until the MN skies turned full blue and opened up for her passage to Heaven, Karen held true to her feisty Norwegian side that molded her family and future legacy.

Karen is survived by her children, Miesche (Rigoberto) Francis and Niklas (Brandee) Maeder; she was an amazing Grandma KK to Jazz (Kyler), Abbylee, Briella, and Zara and many others who also claimed her as grandma; also survived by her brothers, David and Lloyd Knudson; and many nieces and nephews

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Christine and brother, Gerald.

Officiating for her service is Pastor Tori Sahnow.

Casket bearers are Todd Marthaler, Dustin Ilgen, Lance Mueffelmann, Brian Willegalle, Brian Lenzen and Brian Kuhlmann.

Karen was my youngest Sibling and we were very close. We were able to go on two great trips together before her muscle disease restricted her travel. We were also able to spend time together on many occasions. We re- established an event from from our Norwegian heritage of baking Norwegian cookies each year before Christmas (my Granddaughter and I are now carrying on that tradition in honor of my Sister Karen). Our Brother Jerry passed on 15 months earlier from the same muscle disease. Karen, my Brother Lloyd and myself helped as much as we could with Brother Jerry. Karen was a great mentor to me on so many different levels. I know she is in a better place in the hands of God but I will sure miss her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her Family.

My wife Betsy (Anderson) and I would like to express or sadness in learning of Karen’s passing. We both worked with her at the Sauk Centre Home School. We had great respect for her professionalism in what could be a tough work environment.
We are sorry, but will be unable to attend the service. We have made a donation to in honor of her memory.

May your family find peace in your Mother/Grandmothers passing.

Dan and I spent years with Karen in our many Tues. morning bible studies in Shirley Twillinger’s home and St. Pauls Lutheran in Hanover.
Karen was so faithful and through COVID and right to the end she was on a Zoom computer on a turn table with our leader turning it to see the speaker and Karen giving her reply’s.

    We will miss her!
