Joseph Leo Berning, age 83, of St. Michael passed away on Saturday, October 12th, 2013 at The CentraCare Health Care Center in Monticello.
He was born on March 29th, 1930 in Frankfort Township, Wright County the son of Markus & Teresa (Kasper) Berning.
On June 29th, 1957, Joseph L. Berning and Dolores M. Lewis were joined in holy marriage at St. Walburga Catholic Church in Fletcher. God blessed their marriage with five children.
Joe engaged in dairy farming for many years Northwest of St. Michael. He was also a Registered Holstein Breeder. His prefix was “Berning’s Holsteins”.
He was a faithful, lifelong member of The Church of St. Michael in St. Michael. Joe also belonged to The Catholic Aid Association for more than sixty years.
He enjoyed reading farm magazines and area newspapers. While farming, Joe always had Registered Border Collies.
Survived by loving wife of fifty-six years: Dolores; children: Karen (Bruce Yeager) Berning of St. Michael, Jane (Eugene) Kolles of Albertville, Steven Berning of St. Michael and fiancee Terry Hutchinson, Jill (Dan) Hagen of Buffalo and Scott Berning of Maple Lake (Gail Bakeberg); seven grandchildren: Angie (Josh) Weber, Eric (Ashley)Kolles, Tricia Barthel, Geoffrey (Roxy) Berning, Antonia “Toni” Berning, Philip and Mara Hagen; two great-grandchildren and another due in November; brothers: Jerome Berning and James (Mary) Berning and a sister-in-law: Agnes Berning all of St. Michael; many other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, a brother: Raymond, three sisters: Anita Berning, Doris Lee and Evelyn Stupfel, a great- grandson: Leo Weber, and by two brothers-in- law: Bob Lee and Norbert Stupfel.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph Berning will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, October 16th at The Church of St. Michael in St. Michael. Interment will follow at The St. Michael Cemetery.
A visitation will be held at The Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 15th from 4 till 8 P.M. and also at the church on Wednesday morning, October 16th one hour prior to Mass.
Casket Bearers will be Eric Kolles, Geoffrey Berning, Angie Weber, Tricia Barthel and Antonia Berning.
