Joel was adopted by Axel and Anna Carlson at about two years of age from the Owatonna Minnesota Children’s Home. Joel grew up in Buffalo, Minnesota and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1947. From there, he continued his education at Dunwoody Industrial Institute receiving a certificate in Architectural Drafting and Estimating. Joel then began his career with Annandale High School where he was an industrial arts teacher and football coach. He finished out his teaching career in Annandale, retiring in 1985 to pursue his ambition in wood working on his own, where he created memories for many people in his life that will continue on in their lives.

Within two years at St. Cloud State University, Joel William Carlson and Janice Marilyn Stemm were married on August 3, 1957. Two children were born to them: Timothy Joel Carlson on May 8, 1959 and Heidi Jo Karlsson on April 4, 1960.

Joel was influential to me as a student in his Industrial Arts classes and later as a teacher. His Christian example was an inspiration to me. He will be missed. May God comfort and bless you.

Joel was one of my favorite teachers, he always provided encouragement and challenges, which pushed you to figure it out. He is the model of what a teacher should be.

Jan, Heidi, Tim and family – I’m so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. We have many great memories of time at the lake, fun with Good News Singers, the Four Sons quartet, Joe’s big laugh and great sense of humor. I pray that God will continue to wrap His loving arms around you in the coming weeks and months. Love, Todd
