August 16, 1935 – December 28, 2023

James “Jim” Elmer Lanie, age 88, of Buffalo passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

He was born on August 16, 1935 in Browns Valley, Minnesota. The son of Louis & Ida Lanie.  James honorably served his Country in The United States Navy where he was a plank owner on the world’s first super carrier, the USS Forrestal (CVA-59).  James, amongst many things, was an entrepreneur. He started, owned and operated multiple businesses before finally settling on Buffalo Glass & Lock. He operated this business and lived in the Buffalo area for over 30 years. James’s hobbies consisted of working, fixing or building just about anything. Over the years he enjoyed restoring old cars, tractors, boats and motorhomes. Some say, “if you gave Jim a box of parts he could produce you a tractor.” He also built several houses through the years and was very proud of each and every one of them. James’ real passion was firearms. Many hours were spent in the “gun room” or on the range building the latest “super gun,” or perfecting the best cartridge. He always said his bullets would shoot so far he would load a little salt with them to preserve the meat until he could get there. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

James is survived by his loving wife: Donna; children: Louis Lanie, Karen (Bruce) Wenz, Ginger (Mark) Thompson, Cheri (Roger) Jones, Doug Minett, Mike (Stacy) Lanie and Troy (Nicole) Lanie; fourteen grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

James was preceded in death by his grandson Brandon Lanie, his parents, a brother and two sisters.

Donna, my sister Allison Moser sent me Jim’s obituary. I am so sorry for your loss. Mark has been gone 10 years. It doesn’t hurt anymore but you never stop missing them. So glad Mark and Jim were buddies when we lived in Buffalo. Sending my love.

Harvey and I were unable to attend the service for Jim today. You were in our thoughts and prayers.

We miss being neighbors with you. Harvey and Jim worked on so many projects together. Those two could fix anything!

We would like to have a time to sit and visit over a cup of coffee. Not even sure if you know we moved to your former hometown of Hutchinson.

May you and your family find some peace and comfort in your wonderful memories.

    Harvey and Allison
