Irene Josephine Stevens, age 92, entered heaven and back into the arms of her husband & love of her life, Steve, on April 9, 2023. She passed peacefully at home in Buffalo (formerly Maple Grove) surrounded by her loving family and embraced in the love of all who knew her.

Born October 9, 1930 to Peter & Frances (Gerardy) Metz in Adrian, MN, Irene attended grade school in Hadley and graduated Slayton High School in 1948. She completed her RN at the Presentation School of Nursing in Sioux Falls in 1952, a fact she was exceedingly proud of. It was during this time that, while seeing her brother off to basic training, a chance encounter between Irene & Robert “Steve” Stevens led to Steve falling in love at first sight & immediately declaring that, “he was going to marry that girl”.  True to his word and after dozens of letters exchanged & not much convincing, Irene & Steve married on March 7, 1953. Together they had, “three and a half dozen children”—three boys (Mark, Dave & Bob) and six girls (Cathy, Jane, Madonna, Laurie, Mary & Becky)—and were happily married for 53 years until Steve passed in 2006.

Irene’s interests included world traveling (especially Steve’s surprise trips), vegetable & flower gardening, walleye fishing, visiting casinos (when she won), balloon rides, camping, and just having an adventure. Most important to her, without a doubt, was her family. Irene often said that being a mother was the most fun she ever had, and her nursing degree certainly helped!

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Steve, parents Peter & Frances, brothers Ervin, Matthias, Walter, Albert & Wilfred, sisters Mary Ann & Marcella, son-in-law Michael Cory, and numerous in-laws and extended family.

She is survived by her children Mark (Sally) Stevens, Cathy Cory, Jane (Ken) Loney, Madonna (Jamie) Cleaveland, Dave (Lori) Stevens, Laurie Slater, Mary (Clark) Darling Donnelly, Becky (Kenny) Severud, and Bob (fiancé Amy) Stevens, brothers Ray & Joe, sisters Jane & Dorothy, 32 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial for Irene will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. all at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Buffalo, MN.  Luncheon to follow at Huikko’s Bison Creek Event Center in Buffalo, MN.

Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, April 25 at 2:00pm.

My sister Irene (Reenie) was a combination of sister-mother to me. We had this unbelievable bond especially in the last years. We had so much enjoyment being around one another……visits, eating out with Dick, treasure hunting and so much more. I always admired this sister, 10 years my senior. As a child she was my idol. When she left home for college I cried. As adults we had a special connection and many enjoyable times with her and her family. I miss her and our daily phone calls and know she is with Jesus and her loving family. Rest in Peace Reenie. Love forever.
