Ila Jean (Benson) Kubal, age 89 of Maple Plain, passed away June 18, 2021.
She was born on October 30, 1931 in Armour, South Dakota to Arthur and Esther (Hochalter) Benson. Ila graduated from high school in Wagner, South Dakota with the class of 1948.
On November 21, 1949, she was joined in marriage to Charles Alvin Kubal in Wagner, South Dakota. Together they ran their farm in Wagner and raised their three children.
In 1967, the family made the move to Minnesota. They purchased a lake home on Lake Constance in Buffalo, MN in 1971. Ila was a hard worker and held various job positions with several businesses in her lifetime. She worked in management at an airport, was a nurse’s aid at the Monticello Hospital, and cooked at a restaurant. Out of all her jobs, she was most proud of being involved with the Buffalo Co-op.
In 1999, she and Charles moved to Arizona until his passing in April of 2012. Ila moved back to Rapid City, and then relocated to Buffalo again in 2015. Then in 2019, she made her final move to Maple Plain and resided at Haven Homes, where she was made President of the Resident Council.
Ila loved to tend her flower and vegetable gardens, and especially liked growing raspberries. She enjoyed going out for lunch with her family and friends to order hot wings, liked going shopping for all sorts of things, and taking care of her dogs gave her joy. Her spunky and quick wit surprised many people, but she had a genuine and loveable demeanor. Her love for her family was shown immensely and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of happiness in her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; parents, Arthur and Esther Benson; and sister, Janice Benson.
Ila is survived by her children, Daniel (Jonna) Kubal of Idaho, Lynette (Edwin) Namanny of North Dakota, and Cheryl Stemper of Minnesota; grandchildren and their spouses, Heather, Chad, Ryan, and Eric; 10 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; special friends, Beth, Sandy, Judy, and Gary; and mnay other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank the love and care provided to Ila from the staff at Haven Homes and Park Nicolet Hospice. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

Ila’s sassy disposition made her so much fun. We loved her so much and enjoyed our stays in AZ with them. We treasure the banter conversations over insignificant things like a nail in the wall to hold the curtain rods up. She had many talents and was very crafty. She never gave herself much credit for the hard work and quality of her work that made her a valued employee.
When I first came to Haven homes I meant Ila and it’s she really meant a lot to me then and still does today. I was glad to have gotten to know her I will miss her always. God bless Ila!
lla was a wonderful person to visit and play games with. She always had a good comeback or a sarcastic comment. I envied her that ability. Also, she sure loved her chicken wings and ice cream. I would deliver her Schwan’s treats and she would always smile about it. She was always surprised by Heather would treat her to wings or pizza for lunch.
She will really be missed by both residents and staff here.
I know your in the place with who you longed for, for many years, grandma, tell grandpa I’m doing my best to keep the sticks picked up! I am relieved your pain is gone. I hope you and grandpa and Tasha meet me at the bridge when it’s my time. Love tweety lips😊
