Glenard R. Bechtold, age 86 of Buffalo, MN passed
away peacefully in his home to Jesus’ loving arms on February 22, 2016. He was surrounded daily by his loving family. Glenard was born on January 13, 1930 to Richard and Ellen (Lange) Bechtold of Greenfield, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover, MN. He attended Buffalo High School and then enlisted in the
US Navy. He served as petty officer (gunners mate 2nd class) and later was promoted to chief petty officer aboard the U.S.S. Coolbaugh DE 217, stationed at Key West Naval Station in Florida. He served from 1948 to 1952, serving an additional year due to the start of the Korean War. He also met and shook hands with President
Harry S. Truman who came aboard their ship.
He was united in marriage to Joan Schindler on May 12, 1951 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pelican Lake, MN. Glenard was a retired commercial plumbing superintendent with the Twin Cities pipefitters union. Glenard and Joan loved traveling and visited nearly every state. They especially enjoyed their annual trips to Florida, Duluth and annual fishing trips to
Longville, MN with their family. He spent time helping family and friends with home repairs, plumbing, yard work and moving grandchildren to apartments. He was a faithful member of Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church of Delano and later at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rockford. He served on the church council, school board, various offices and volunteered
with various repair work.
Glenard was a gentle, strong, loving Christian
husband and father. He loved the outdoors, being an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed annual hunting and fishing trips with his family.
He will be dearly missed, especially for his love, courage and sense of humor. God received a special angel.
Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene and Wilfred; sister, Norma Miller; son, Neal; son-in-law, Douglas Ebeling; daughters-in-law, Carol and Kim.
Survived by his wife, Joan; sons: Brian (Kerry) of Richmond, MN, Todd of Buffalo, MN, Mark of St. Cloud, MN; daughters: Jill Ebeling of Buffalo, MN and Joy (Jeffrey) Downs of Buffalo, MN; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law: Elaine Bechtold of Hanover, MN, Dolores Schindler
of Hutchinson, MN; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Schindler of Buffalo, MN.
