Geraldine “Gerry” Elizabeth Axvig, age 91 of Big Lake, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019. She was born in Lester Prairie, MN on August 15, 1928. She was 1 of 11 children born to Benjamin and Evangeline (Shovelain) Artmann.

On December 27, 1949, Geraldine Artmann and Gene Axvig were united in Holy Matrimony at the Basilica Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN. The two were blessed with four children, Lawrence, Loren, LuAnn and Linda.

Gerry worked for Federal Cartridge for 30 years until her retirement in 1988. After retirement, Gerry worked at K-Mart for 8 years. She volunteered her time at the Senior Center in Monticello for many years and with Mary of the Lake Visitation Catholic Church working funerals and donating her delicious food. Gerry was a faithful member of Mary of the Lake Visitation Catholic Church and attended Mass every Sunday, until her later years in life when she was unable to attend church she faithfully watched Sunday Mass on TV.

She enjoyed Merle Haggard and his music, crocheting, embroidery, puzzles, watching mystery shows, emailing friends and keeping up to date with everyone on Facebook, cooking, and traveling the world with Gene.

Gerry was a selfless woman who loved caring for others. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Evangeline Artmann; husband, Gene Axvig; sons, Lawrence “Larry” Axvig, Loren Axvig; daughter, LuAnn Newberry; son-in-law, Doug Knudson; and siblings, Florentine, Duane, Lennis “Stoney”, MaryAnn and Anna Mae.

Gerry is survived by her daughter, Linda Knudson; son-in-law, Joe “Milt” Newberry; grandchildren, Jason Axvig, Erin Knudson (fiancé, Jon Alexander), Kasey Knudson, Natalie (Austin) Stevenson, Daniel Axvig, Shannon Axvig, Susan Axvig; siblings, Daryl (Pam) Artmann, Jeannine (Dan) Erickson, Harlan Artmann; and many other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gerry’s name are preferred to the Monticello Senior Center.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 20, 2019 at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church, 12100 Sherburne Ave, Becker, MN. Inurnment to follow at Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery in Big Lake, MN.
