Fern Loken, age 88 of Buffalo, Mn died peacefully on 1/7/2016. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Merle, her parents Edward (Cora) Buhler and two brothers, Lyle and Clifford Buhler. Survived by her sister, Lorraine Anderson; her five children Allen (Kim) Loken, Evonne (Jim) Pedersen, Gwen (Miguel) Bottoli, Lynette (Greg) Hayes and Warren (Sandy) Loken; AFS son J¨¹rgen (Ulrike) Alpers; her 12 grandchildren, Troy (Deanna) Loken and Kari Loken, Lauren (Mike) Freiberg, Kirsten (Phil) Kenny, Dane Pedersen, Anthony, Sasha and Tania Bottoli, Heidi and Wyatt Hayes, Marissa (Liam) Girard and Chase Loken; Six great grandchildren, Corey and Emily Loken, Rose and Joseph Freiberg, Mikayla and Philip Kenny. Fern grew up on a farm near Butler, South Dakota, receiving a teaching degree from Augustana College after high school where she was valedictorian. After marrying Merle Loken, the couple moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul MN area where they resided for over 60 years. In their later years, Merle and Fern enjoyed their home on Lake Pulaski in Buffalo, MN, where family, relatives and friends often visited. Fern is remembered as a loving mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She always enjoyed music, and shared this love with her family and others. Fern taught herself to play piano and throughout her children’s youth, encouraged them with piano lessons and in band at school. Fern also enjoyed singing with the choir at Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church. Fern’s strong faith led her to support the Lutheran Church in its mission work around the world as well as to actively volunteer in her home church and community. In the late 1960’s, Fern served as President to a local chapter of the American Field Service; organization dedicated to international peace and understanding. After moving to Buffalo, MN, Fern made time to help out at the Buffalo Hospital, help distribute Meals on Wheels, and to actively participate as a member of Buffalo’s Zion Lutheran Church. Fern’s beautiful smile and warm, bright countenance will be deeply missed by many. Funeral: Sun., May 29th, 2 PM Celebration of Life, Zion Lutheran Church, Buffalo MN. Aunt Fern was truly a gentle soul …always had a radiant smile, a loving heart & hands,& a delightful sense of humor, Patience was on the top of the list of her virtues, & quite necessary when you marry a Loken boy & have 5 not-always- angelic children !! Prayers & blessings to these cousins & their families as they grieve.
