Elvina Evelyn (Kohnen) Bechthold, age 87 of Buffalo, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017. She was born August 18, 1929 in a farmhouse four miles West of Hamel, MN, the second child of Elvina (Dressel) Kohnen and John H. Kohnen.

She attended a one room school through grade six. A move off the farm in 1941 saw her attending Jordan, Seward, South High and Vocational High School where she graduated in 1948. She lived in Robbinsdale, MN from 1945 until 1964.

Going to work at age 14 at Robbinsdale Laundry, after graduation and training she was a comptometer operator at Archer Daniels Midland, obtained her nursing degree at the U of M and was a nurse in Pediatrics at the U of M until her marriage to Garlend Bechthold in 1955. She worked as night nurse at Homewood Nursing Home in Minneapolis while raising three children until 1964 when they moved to a farm in Buffalo, MN where she continued working night shifts at Delano Nursing Home. The last 20 plus years of her nursing career were spent as a night nurse at Anoka State Hospital where she ended her nursing career at age 75.

Elvina loved reading, gardening, crafts, sewing, company and having her grandchildren over. She owned and rode a motorcycle in her younger years, loved, rode, and helped raise their horses, loved dancing and was a semi-professional roller derby skater. She went to water aerobics in Buffalo after leaving work at 7:00 AM for many years and made many wonderful friends.

Elvina’s main love was people and helping them. She brought items to patients and was constantly there for her family and friends. Totally non-judgmental, she had a wonderful sense of humor. A positive role model to everyone, she was the best wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend anyone could wish for. She will live forever in our hearts.

Preceded in death by her parents, John and Elvina Kohnen; and brother and sister-in-law, Willis and Mary Kohnen.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Garlend Bechthold; children, Craig Bechthold, Jennifer (Richard) Clarey, Curtis (Carmen) Bechthold; grandchildren, Jeanne (Jon), Ryan (Alisha), Elli (Ryan), Brittany (Trevor), Travis (Brittney), Kristin (Ryan), Grace; great-grandchildren, Collin, Ryan, Brayden, Caitlyn, Alannah, Vincent, Hunter, Liam; sister, Betty Lou (Ray) Waszut; Godchild, Wendy Barrett; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

I also knew Alvina from the health club. I always enjoyed talking with her in the sauna and pool. She was a spicy unique person with a great sense of humor. I am sorry I am not able to make the celebration of her life as I will be out of town. I was looking forward to meeting her family. My thoughts are with you at this time.
