November 26,1939 – May 7, 2023

Duane David Barthel, age 83, of St. Michael passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

He was born on November 26, 1939 in St. Michael the son of Alfred & Bernadette (Vetsch) Barthel, and was raised in St. Michael.

Duane was a member of St. Michael High School Class of 1959.

He honorably served his Country in The United States Army Reserves.

On October 13, 1962, Duane D. Barthel and Kathleen A. O’Donnell were joined in holy matrimony at the St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael.   God blessed their marriage with seven children.

Duane started Duane’s Septic Service in 1991.

He was a lifelong member of the St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael.   Duane was a former usher and Eucharistic Minister.   He also belonged to The Knights of Columbus and served as the St. Michael Catholic Cemetery’s Sexton for forty years.

Duane enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, maintaining the tractors and equipment, and traveling with his wife Kathy.

Survived by his loving wife of sixty years:  Kathy Barthel; children: Jeanne (Wes) Holland, Keith (Sue) Barthel, Lorianne (Scott) Ende, Tim (Debbie) Barthel, Theresa (Jim) Eicher and Anne (Roger) Tiernan; daughter-in-law: Kathy Jo Barthel (Kerry’s wife); twenty-nine grandchildren and forty-one great grandchildren; brothers: Willard “Willie” (Mary Jane) Barthel, Kenneth (Catherine) Barthel and Jerome (Shirley) Barthel; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Preceded in death by his son Kerry Barthel and by his parents.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for Duane Barthel will be held on Wednesday, May 24th, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael.

Interment will follow at the St. Michael Cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd from 4-8 P.M. AT THE CHURCH’S St. Joseph Hall.  A Rosary will be recited at 8:00 P.M.   Further visitation will be held on Wednesday morning, May 24th, one hour prior to Mass at the church.

Honorary Casket Bearers:  Grandsons Drew Holland, Brent Holland, Bryan Holland, Ben Barthel, Bryce Barthel, Sam Eicher, Danny Eicher and Isaac Eicher

Casket Bearers:   Grandsons Eric Holland, Brandon Barthel, Tristan Ende, Ian Barthel, Nick Eicher, Eli Tiernan.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials are suggested for the St. Michael Catholic School or Options for Women/Cornerstone.
