Dorothy Elaine (nee Peterson) Lonson passed away peacefully on July 15, 2014, at a care facility in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, with members of her family by her side. Dorothy died from complications of several recent strokes.

Born on a family farm in Montrose, Minnesota, on July 22, 1925, Dorothy was the eldest child of Hugo and Esther Peterson.

Dorothy spent the early years of her life either in Minneapolis or on the Montrose family farm. She graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis at the age of 15.

In Seattle, Washington, on August 29, 1943, Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Robert DeWitt Lonson, who was at the Naval Air Station in Pasco, Washington, following service in the battles of Midway, Santa Cruz Island, and the Coral Seas during World War II. Following Bob’s Naval discharge in September 1945, the couple moved back to Minneapolis, where the couple had their three children, Susan, Gunnar and Erik.

The family moved to Houston, Texas, in 1953, and then to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1956, where Dorothy and Bob lovingly raised their family. Dorothy supplemented the family income by sewing for friends and neighbors as well as dance teams and twirling/baton teams.

Bob and Dorothy moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1971. Dorothy worked for 22 1/2 years as a bookkeeper at Canyon Records and Indian Arts in Phoenix, Arizona. She graduated from Phoenix College at the age of 57 in 1983. Dorothy remained in Scottsdale until her physical limitations required a move to her daughter’s residence in Buffalo, Minnesota, in late 2012.
Dorothy was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. Her main hobbies included sewing and other needlework, and playing in as many as five bridge clubs at a time. Over the years, she was active in Christian Women’s Fellowship, TTT, PTA, and was a Girl and Cub Scout leader. She believed in giving back to her community, delivering food to home bound AIDS patients through the Phoenix Agape Network program for 9 years. Over the years, she visited almost all fifty states and following her retirement from Canyon Records, she visited China, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Italy, France, Finland and Russia. She spent each Thanksgiving with her sons’ families in California, and Christmases with her daughter’s family in Minnesota.

Dorothy is survived by her brother, Allyn (MaRie) Peterson of St. Louis Park, MN, three children, Susan (Charles) Mackey of Buffalo, Minnesota, Gunnar Lonson of Santa Barbara, California, and Erik (Mary Jayne) Lonson of Novato, California, eleven grandchildren, Joshua Mackey, Jacob Mackey, Cadyanna (Nate Johnston) Mackey, Calyanne (Lucinei) Muniz Castro, Jonah Mackey, all of the Twin Cities area; Ashleigh (Dan) Chu, Michael Lonson, Bradley Lonson, all of the Los Angeles area; Christopher Lonson, Brendan Lonson and Erika Lonson, all of the San Francisco area; together with four great-grandchildren: Aiden Johnston, Carter Mackey, Evan and Graham Chu.

A gathering will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM at Peterson Funeral Home in Buffalo on Thursday with funeral services being held at The Peterson Chapel, July 19, 2014, Buffalo, MN at 10:00 AM followed by interment at Kreidler Cemetery of Montrose.
