Doris Vivian (Thompson) Henson passed away peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2016 after a brief illness, with family by her side.
She was born on May 28, 1933 in Buffalo, Minnesota the daughter of Walter and Florence Thompson.
Doris began her education in a one room rural school house near her home north of Buffalo. She graduated from Buffalo High School in 1951 and went to work as a dental assistant for Dr. Kelly.
Doris married Willard L. Henson on April 30, 1955. Together they raised their 3 children: Paulette, Thomas, and Brenda. They enjoyed a rich and wonderful life together in the Buffalo community.
Doris loved to sew and was a very talented seamstress. Many will remember her for her sewing services, whether it was patching blue jeans or making fine wedding gowns, she did it all. She also was a dedicated gardener creating beautiful flower gardens that welcomed everyone into her yard and gave pleasure to all that saw them. Doris was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church and it was a second home and family to her. She took great pleasure in singing in Zion’s choir for more than 45 years and was always involved with the Rebecca Circle and other women’s ministries. Doris also served as the church kitchen manager for many years, giving comfort and joy to many as she coordinated funeral lunches and other events. In the early 1990’s Doris found a new calling and joined a weekly quilting group with the church. She and her close quilting friends have provided thousands of handmade quilts for missions around the world. Doris loved her family deeply. Her life was enriched by all her friends and extended family. Her house was always open to all and her cookie jar was always full.
Doris is survived by her three children: Paulette (Andrew) Epple, Tom (Diane Essig) Henson, and Brenda (Frank) Sienkiewicz; her five grandchildren: Ryan, Mandy, Amber, Erika and Nicholas; her four great grandchildren; her sister: Janet (Donald) Schirmers; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years, Willard, and her sister, Helen (Otis) Brose.
