Donald Lee Von Wald Jr. was born November 12th, 1941, in Aberdeen, SD to Donald and Ruth (Story) Von Wald. He passed under the care of his family at his home in Otsego, MN on October 30th, 2023.

Donald graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1959 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Northern State College in 1966. In his younger years, he was an accomplished pianist and clarinetist. He worked at Taylor Music in Aberdeen and learned the art of instrument repair. Don married Carole Jeanne Henschel on September 2nd, 1966, and began his career with the Social Security Administration on September 6th, 1966, in Kansas City, MO. Two years later he transferred to Des Moines, IA where he served for 10 months. Don then transferred to Huron, SD in 1969 where his son Steven was born. He received his final transfer back to Aberdeen in 1973 where daughter Pamela was born, and where he was promoted to Senior Representative. In this capacity, he frequently travelled throughout SD to assist others with Social Security enrollments and disability claims. Don’s hobbies were archery, woodworking, hunting, and fishing. He retired in 2001 after 35 faithful years of service.

Post retirement, Don continued his interest in fishing including building his own boat and adding tools to his woodworking shop. Don built numerous elaborate pieces of furniture. On the advice of local woodshops, Don started his own small business, “Don’s Woodworking” to handle small jobs that the bigger shops refused. Whenever visiting peoples’ homes, he would often notice something that needed to be fixed and take care of it for them (whether they wanted it or not).

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Carole of 57 years, sister Linda and (Glenn) Ringgenberg, brother James Von Wald, brother-in-law Gene Tagtow, sister-in-law Zoule Von Wald, children Steven and (Julie) Von Wald, Pamela and (Christopher) Roble, and grandchildren Regan and (Gonzalo) Carranza, Sophia and (Jacob) Burgess, Judah Roble, Craig Von Wald and Faith Von Wald.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Vierl Dresselhuys, brother Robert Von Wald, and sister JoAnn Tagtow.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 12:00 PM with visitation starting at 11:30 AM at The Peterson Chapel of St. Michael-Albertville.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to The Peterson Chapel of St. Michael-Albertville. Online condolences for the family may be directed to
