Donald G. Barthel, 90, of Albertville, born to Albert and Lena (Kasper) Barthel on May 25, 1924, passed away at his home surrounded by family on August 2, 2014. He is survived by his children, Albert (Pam), Stanley, Gail (Reggie) Hinrichs, Rodney, Jason (Dawn), 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, brother Louis (Sylvia) Barthel, sisters Verena Zachman, Catherine Elsenpeter, Betty (Harvey) Zahler, brothers-in-law Pete Isenberg and Floyd (Marcia) Schweigert and sisters-in-law Margaret Barthel, Dorethy Schweigert and Mavis Schweigert. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty, sisters Alicetine Schroepfer, Florence Isenberg, Cecelia Fish and brothers Clarence, Aloys, Ernie, Benno and Norman. Donald grew up on the family farm just outside Albertville. He served in the U.S. Army. In 1958, he began Don’s Bus Service, which 56 years later is still being operated by his four sons. Don was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a very active member of the community, having been a volunteer fireman and fire chief, city councilman, mayor, charter member of the Albertville Lions Club and a faithful member of St. Albert Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial for Donald G. Barthel will be Saturday, August 9th, 2014 at 11:00 at St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Albertville. Father Xavier Thelakkatt will be the Celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Albert’s Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, August 8th from 4-8 p.m. at St. Albert’s Catholic Church. A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. Further visitation will be held at the church on Saturday morning, August 9th, 2014 one hour prior to Mass. Casket Bearers will be grandsons: Travis Novotny, Kyle Novotny, Clayton Hinrichs, Erick Barthel, Donald Barthel II and Jordan Barthel.

    I’m very sorry for your family’s loss. Don was a great man and will be missed by many. I was lucky to meet and know him the last few years. I know he is now with his beloved wife Betty and no longer in pain but none the less will be missed. Love you Don!

    Just found about Don’s passing and want to share our sympathies with you. He will be missed by many as he touched many lives during his 90 years. May he rest in peace.
