Donald A. Soupir (77) passed away suddenly and peacefully at his home on April 26, 2024. He was surrounded by all the things he loved: his wife Janet, land and pets. Don was born in Tracy, Minnesota and raised in Milroy, Minnesota. He loved living on the farm and helping his father, Anton, with all the farming. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends located in the area.

Don loved his country and joined the Minnesota National Guard right after high school. He was a Master Sergeant, E8 and was a Winter Operations Instructor, stationed at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, Minnesota and with the Minnesota National Guard headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota and retired with 24 years of service. He was part of the Norwegian/Swedish-American Military Exchange Programs, climbed the highest mountain on the Swedish-Norwegian border and did 52 degrees below zero in a snow cave several times. He also served his country in Japan. He was with the 47th Viking Infantry Division.

Don even tried out for the Lake Placid Winter Olympics USA Biathlon Team and finished 3rd.

Don was a Finish Carpenter for 50 years doing all kinds of simple and elegant woodworking. He built the altar in the St. Francis Xavier Christ the King Adoration Chapel as well as framed the circular stained glass window of Christ’s Crown in the Adoration Chapel.

Don taught Wood Shop for 12 years at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Buffalo to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Don and Jan met in 1998 and were married in 2000 at their home in Montrose, Minnesota in front of many family and friends. He and Jan were active members at their church and community. They traveled to Medjugorje three times to see the Our Lady of Medjugorje sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They enjoyed taking drives to see various state parks and churches around the neighboring cities.

Donald is survived by his wife, Janet of 24 years, daughter Christa Schnabel (Bob Mundahl), brother-in-law, John (Patty) Webster, nieces Tina (Kelly) Peterson, Amanda (Dexton) Koch, Brianna (Brandon) Buchanan, nephews, Thomas Heuer, Erik Dutcher, DJ Heuer and many cousins. Don is preceded in death by his daughter, Joy; parents Anton and Christine Soupir, sister Kathleen, sister-in-law Roberta Blood and nephew Anton Heuer.

The family prefers memorials be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in lieu of flowers.

Evening visitation will be held Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM with a prayer service and rosary at 7:00 PM at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (300 1st Ave NW, Buffalo, MN). Mass of Christian Burial will take place the following day on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior, at the church.

Interment with military honors will be held at a later date at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to The Peterson Chapel of Buffalo. Online condolences for the family may be directed to

Don was a great skier and instructor at Camp Ripley. He worked many summers clearing and building firing ranges. He was a man of a thousand stories. He will be missed by his many Snow Buddies.

    My sincerest sympathy Jan,
Donnie was a awesome person with a heart of gold. He had stories and life experiences that he shared with whom would take the time to listen. I always enjoyed visiting with you both. I remember being at your wedding and spending time with Anton and remember how much that meant to Donnie to have his Dad there.
Jan it doesn’t look like I will be able to be with you to celebrate Donnies life, just know I am thinking of you and sending Prayers & Hugs ❤️ …
