Daniel James Wilkes, age 62, of Buffalo, Mn went home to Heaven on Sunday, June 23, 2013 after a four year battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his father: Don Carrol Austin Wilkes, of Spring Park, MN and his sister Linda Ione Nash of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Dan was the second of four children. He grew up in Spring Park, MN where his dad, “Porky” Wilkes was the chief of police. He graduated from Mound High School.
Dan loved to talk about his days in the Army where he served in the signal corp from 1969 until his discharge.
While working at the Wayzata Country Club Market, in 1981, he married Kim Reay of Woodland Village, and one year later they had a house built in Buffalo, where they raised their five children.

He was a great handyman, a huge movie buff and an avid reader. Dan loved to take family camping trips and would spend hours hiking with his kids, often blazing his own trail. Among his favorite places were the Black Hills of SD and the North Shore of Lake Superior. The trip he remembered with perhaps the most fondness was in 2001 when the family rented and RV and drove to Alaska.

Dan had a strong work ethic and was well-respected at the jobs he held throughout his lifetime. In July of 2012, he retired from The Buffalo Walmart where he had worked the overnight shift in the Produce Department.

Dan is survied by his wife: Kim Wilkes of Buffalo; his children: Samantha (Jared) Gonzales of Buffalo, Bridget Wilkes of Sauk Centre, Seth Wilkes (and finace Jackie Keller) of Big Lake, Austin Wilkes (and fiance Sadie Hanson) of Monticello, Travis Wilkes (and girlfriend Kate Heberling) of Buffalo; three beautiful granddaughters: Gabriella and Lillyana Gonzales and Daisy Wilkes; his mother: Betty Wilkes of Buffalo; sister: Laura (Rick) Moyer of Wayzata; brother: Don (Brenda) Wilkes of Ashland, WI; brother-in-law: Rick Nash of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and numerous other relatives and friends.

    Kim and Family,
I only knew Dan from sight and maybe said “hello” in passing as we both worked at Walmart. However, I do know Kim and what great courage and strengh she has and such unshakable faith. It is amazing and truly a blessing to know Kim. I am sorry about Dan and I know he is up in heaven singing with the angels and will very shortly wake up to the presence of Jesus Christ. Dan, when you get there and you see my mom (she is the short little lady singing hymns and rattling off her own hand written rap song) tell her hello and maybe you guys can discuss books. (She loved to read, too.)

I think he walked through the gates of Heaven with a smile on his face knowing he was blessed with a loving family and friends. He is at peace.
With all my love and deepest sympathy,

My prayers go out to the Wilkes family. I had the great pleasure of working with Dan for 2 years at the beginning of my supervisory career. He taught me many more things than I’ll ever be able to thank him for. He will be missed.
