October 25, 1929 – October 26, 2023

Bernice passed away peacefully on October 26, 2023 at the age of 94. She was born on October 25, 1929 to Anton Sr. and Frances (Kalla) Gruenke. She was the 12th of 13 siblings and grew up in Albany, MN.  After high school, she moved to Minneapolis and lived with her sister, Viola (Fahnhorst) and her family. She worked at Remington Rand where she met her (future) husband. She married William B. Steffen on February 8, 1958. They made their home in Maple Grove, Minnesota and raised a family of seven children. Throughout her life, she participated in women’s bowling and golfing leagues. In 1990, they moved to Osakis, MN where she continued be part of the women’s golf league for many years. Bernice was a person of deep faith. She was a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Osseo and then St. Mary of Mount Carmel in Long Prairie, MN. In line with most of her other siblings, she was also an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

Bernice is survived by sons Glenn (Amy) – Chanhassen, Chris – Dalton, Scott (Mary) – Albertville, Mark (Sandra) – Excelsior and daughters Gail (Joe) Diedrick – Chanhassen, Cheryl (Jeff) Swenson – Rogers, Mary – Maple Grove, and 12 grandchildren – Craig, Eric, Blake, Carter, Abby, Derek (Jordyn), Brett (Ashley), Brittney (Joe), Brooke, Erin, Rhett and William.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and by siblings Harry, Viola, Hortense, Alfred, Eleanor, Werner, Delores, Gumpert, Pirmin, Virgil, Ruthie and Anthony.
